"Did you know that with $105.00, you can sponsor an orphan or vulnerable child for 2012 academic year with books, tuition and health insurance all included?
There are over 2,000 orphans and vulnerable children who cannot afford any form of education in the Bui and Donga Mantung Division in Cameroon.Vulnerable kids are either orphans or kids who have lost a parent to HIV/AIDS.

Our goal is to sponsor 100 children for the 2012 academic year.

He also obtained a second Masters Degree in Finance from Tulane University in New - Orleans, Louisiana and certificates in Strategic Framework and Financial Stewardship for nonprofit/non-governmental organizations from the John. F. School of Government at Harvard University.

Kitz is the 2006 recipient of the Greater Houston Business Ethics Scholarship Award for his work on Amom Charity, loves people and travel. He believes that value can be added to humanity in our own little way by being public servants without public office.

......THE LAND OF A 1000 HILLS.....

This is my first "Travel Experience" blog post.I just had to share my experience in " the land of a thousands hills"....Rwanda!!

I arrived Rwanda on August 12th 2011. It was probably my best immigration experience to date. With a pre-entry visa and $50 less than 10 minutes later I had a 30 day visa! The immigration officers were polite, courteous and very curious about my reason of entry. My response: To visit a friend..."Welcome to Rwanda.. Enjoy your stay.I hope you like our beautiful country ".I even learnt how to greet in the local language. "Kinyarwanda"......"...Bitey"..Response: "...Biza...". It turned about to be an activity packed 10 days!!

Please don't get me started on the "contritok matter"..lol...I was shocked that the whole country of about 11 million speaks the same language!! The official language was recently changed from French to English. The president decided to align the country with East Africa. Talk about a radical and major change...especially in Education!!If you ask me...it is sort of bilingual!!

During my stay I kept asking....What does Rwanda have? I did not get any convincing answers.."hmmm...a good part of the government's revenue is made from taxes", "Tea, Coffee", " ..hmmm...a bit of Tourism....the mountain Gorrilas..."

What impressed me about Kigali (and Rwanda as a whole!)

The organization & infrastructure: clean streets, good roads, nice buildings. The district with the state/gov't buildings is off the hook to say the least! Plastics bags are not allowed in Rwanda...You get a brown paper bag instead!!That partly explains the cleanliness of the streets!

Bike (aka bend skin, okada) drivers wear a coat with an ID number clearly marked. The bike driver and passenger wear helmets!!!

The building/construction Style...Q: Whats up with Zinc in Cameroon? hahaha! On a serious note though...I loved the building/construction style in Kigali..very modern and some houses still had the "African touch"....

The 3 hr ride to Gisenyi was very scenic..All soo familiar....the landscape....hills, tea plantations, pyramid shaped roff tops etc etc. (Trips to Bamenda, Buea??lol) .I really enjoyed my stay at Lake Kivu Serena Hotel..Customer Service,Check.Rooms,Check. Food, Check. Scenery. Check..Lake Kivu is the sixth largest lake in Africa!Lake big sotey..lol...

I think despite the country's history i.e. the 1994 genocide, it is picking up quite well..atrracting returnees from left right and center, tourists, investors, expatriates..etc. Apparently it is the "Model for Africa" for some organizations..

...."Fav Find": Chronology of Events....

In honour of today's 10th Anniversary!I still have a vivid memory of this day during my last year in University. That morning I thought I was watching movie trailer and realized It was real when I got to school..It was scary to say the least especially because I had family and friends who worked in NY...and I was at the twin towers less than 2 months before the saga!!

My heart goes out to those who lost family and friends on this tragic day!May their soul rest in perfect peace...Hats up to the Heroes of 9/11!!

Last Sunday's Fab find..."Chronology of Events"..at a United Reformist Church in Dartford,UK!!I think the guy who had to open the church for me to take pictures thought I was crazy....lol.This was done by members of the Pilots Association (A charity) of the church!!Some people have seen these events and even more in their life time..

2011 has been filled with events...

It is amazing how some brands have stood the test of time..e.g. Coca Cola, Mars,KitKat,Lego...etc..

Born in Yaounde on November 11th, 1987, Olivia Mukam obtained her High School Diploma from the American School of Yaoundé in 2005. She graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a degree in International Relations and a concentration on African Development in January 2009.

In a spirit of Harambe/“togetherness” in Swahili, we can transform our problems into opportunities, and have a long-lasting impact on the development of our nation.

About Harambe Cameroon

As President and Founder of Harambe-Cameroon, Olivia Mukam established Cameroon’s first Social Entrepreneurship Program: an opportunity zone for Cameroonian university students to translate their ideas into actions, as they propose business enterprises to solve local problems.

The initiative Harambe Cameroon is led by an alliance of young Cameroonians in the diaspora, from the US, UK, France and Asia. Founded in 2009, Harambe Cameroon is an independent branch of the global alliance Harambe Entrepreneur Alliance, recognized and supported by the White House in the United States, Westminster, England, the Ghanaian Parliament, African and global leaders such as Mo Ibrahim and Aliko Dan Gote.

The Social Entrepreneurship Program

Harambe-Cameroon’s Social Entrepreneurship Program aims at promoting entrepreneurship among university students in Cameroon, specifically through the organization of annual competitions. The objective is to provide participants with tools to translate their ideas into concrete projects, with an impact on our community. Harambe Cameroon's mission is "to inspire a new generation of young leaders and entrepreneurs who see problems as opportunities in need of solutions".

In March 2010, and as part of the first edition of the social entrepreneurship program, Harambe-Cameroon hosted its first competition at Mont Febe Hotel, entitled, “The Problem-Solvers’ : 90 seconds to convince " Competition. The Top-four students who proposed the best solutions - creative, convincing, and enterprising - to problems they had identified in their communities were rewarded by the United States Embassy in Cameroon. Due to the buoyant success of this competition, Harambe-Cameroon organized a national competition in 2011.

Harambe Cameroon's Objectives

Change the paradigm as it relates to entrepreneurship and competition among Cameroon’s youth.
Empower the individual by providing necessary training and skills development that will allow them to translate their ideas into ventures for the benefit of the community.
Provide a support network comprising of students, mentors/experts, NGOs, businesses and government agencies.

The Social Entrepreneurship Program is structured in 5 steps [ISICI]

Introduction: Activate Harambe Clubs “The Problem-Solvers’ Club” in each regional University (Yaoundé, Douala, Buea, Dchang, Bagangté).Applications open to all university students.
Selection: Online/social network challenges to select the Top-5 nationwide Problem-Solvers.

Incubation: Top-5 teams invited to the 2-days Business –camp, prior to the Competition

Competition: Each of the 5 Teams of 5 will propose a social innovation project.
Implementation: The Top-2 social enterprises would be implemented.

Ms. Mukam....The Humanitarian

Prior to Harambe, Ms Mukam initiated a couple of projects to solve critical problems in some communities in Cameroon. In 2007, the alarming health conditions of children in the village of Bamendjou-West Cameroon suffering from water-borne diseases prompted her to start a water addition and sanitation project in collaboration with the Engineers Without Borders (EWB) of the University of Delaware. After 3 years of implementation, the project has provided access to clean water to about 3,000 people in the village, reducing the risk of diseases in the village. Moreover, as a spokesperson for Les Amies Colombes, in 2008, Ms Mukam rallied the Johns Hopkins University’s (JHU) African Student Association (ASA) to collaborate with this Cameroonian youth-empowerment NGO. Ms Mukam was motivated to form this collaboration after identifying the need for destitute Cameroonian girls to be educated and self-empowered. During the annual African Student Association Festival, the JHU ASA raised funds to sponsor 20 Cameroonian girls’ training in a vocational school in Douala, Cameroon.

Since her return to Cameroon in July 2009, Olivia Mukam has gained professional experience working with UNICEF Cameroon (September-December 2009), and as a consultant for international NGOs and investment companies.

Following a traffic stopping launch of its Pop Up FashionMarket, BEFFTA Award nominated PR & marketing firm, Votre Avant Garde (VAG) is planning a second instalment. Set in London’s edgy Brick Lane, the company’s new venture, which took place on Sunday 3rd July, was organised in association with glossy magazine, FAB.

“We wanted to create a fun way of taking the latest catwalk chic to people’s closets,” explained VAG’s Marketing Officer, Isabel Bezeng.

The bazaar featured unique creations from Asakeoge, Kamondi Couture, Ayikai Couture, Yaa Ataa Bags and textile connoisseur, Yaa Ohenewa. Style lovers enjoyed a colourful and vibrant atmosphere as they bagged exquisite Africhic at amazing prices and sampled delights from event sponsor, Lolita’s Cupcakes. Lucky fashionistas also won free copies of FAB.

For many, the highlight of the day was an impromptu street catwalk show.

“This is the best way to do it! I have travelled around Africa and this really captures its essence,” raved passerby Daniel, of the spectacle, which, he noted, was the first of its kind on Brick Lane.

For shopper, Christina Swanepoel, the catwalk was a unique display of African beauty. “Having the models on the road was a very clever way of bringing African beauty to the observer's eye!
I also loved the background drumming, which certainly attracted the attention of tourists. Their awe and appreciation were palpable,” she explained.

Swanepoel also appreciated the store’s relaxed ambience. “It was informal and consumer friendly; people were offering advice and made friendly 'small talk.' I didn’t get the impression of sales ladies wanting to 'sell' the garments at all cost,” she observed.

CAMpreneur, Fri Forjindam Bailey launches Wedding Nouveau Magazine on July 11th 2011....

What inspired you to start Wedding Nouveau?....The wedding Nouveau story
It came up as an after thought really while planning my own wedding in 2008. I moved to the US as an impressionable teenager, however, there's a strong and unchangeable core that is uniquely Cameroonian. Wedding planning is challenging enough as is, so when you throw in very different cultures, distance, expectations and questions like: "In what country will we have the knock door?", then you've got yourself a whole new game. I was overwhelmed by the assault of wedding magazines on newstands all preaching the same old trends, gowns and refurbished ideas. On the other hand, I was extremely frustrated with the lack of resources for brides like me in interracial/ intercultural relationships. Over a year later, a teeny tiny little blog began. I think my monthly page view for that first month was a little under 1000 views (70% of which, surely came from me). In the last year and a half, we've grown from a teeny blog to an online magazine, and now a digital and print magazine to follow.

What challenges have you faced so far in setting up a blogazine and now the print version?
LOL, the question really should be "What challenges HAVEN'T I faced." Let's begin with the fact that I'm not tech savy. Yes, I can blast the occasional text with one hand, and I know a thing or two about DVRs, but when it comes to web design and internet jargon, I've become a self taught html coder. When I decided to start the blog, I had a strong sense of what I wanted the overall look and feel to be, but was completely clueless when it came to the technical stuff. And that's where google and self-help books came in. I taught myself basic terminology, do's and don'ts of web building and how to code...YIKES! I can honestly say that if you set you mind to it, you can do anything.

Secondly,marketing! In the beginning, I had an uphill battle to climb of just getting others to take me seriously. Without content, WEDDING NOUVEAU wouldn't have the readership it does now, but if photographers and designers don't know your business, they'll be less likely to share their content with you. So there was a lot of woo-ing, calling and email stalking in the beginning. All I can say to that, is I'm glad I kept knocking. As a theatre artist, trained in New York, I'm used to the brutal repetition of rejection. Little did I know that my graduate training in tenacity would prepare me for this.

Thirdly, I'm a wife and new mother. The deceptive appearance of blogging is that it's passive and quick. If you're are particular as I am, then it actually requires hours of tending for content, marketing, advertising, management, etc. When you add that demand to the reality of being a wife and mother to an 18 month (who at the time it started was a newborn)...well, let's just say, that I have a wonderful and supportive husband, who appreciates his wife who never sleeps.

And that's just for the blog...Get back to me in a few months and I'll dish on print. For now, I'll say that it is definitely not as easy as it seems, and I couldn't have done it without all the fabulous contributors for the articles, photo shoots and more.

So here we are. Almost two years after the blog began, the magazine to me is the actual first step to what I'd always dreamed. WEDDING NOUVEAU is the premiere style guide for intercultural brides and muli-ethnic weddings. As a quaterly publication (digital & print), each issue showcases real interracial weddings, customs from around the world and fab global finds. The vision is simple, to Dream in Culture™, one inspiration at a time.

Jenny's Hero of the Month....Francis Mancho!!!

This amazing story made my week.Thanks a lot for sharing Dr. SEA..

I constantly seek inspiration and the story of a teenager's work in his community is very inspiring.

Former talk show host Jenny Jones through her charitable foundation, "The Jenny Jones Foundation" is prepared to give away $2 million for causes around the US of A!

Francis Mancho from Budd Lake, New Jersey is Jenny's Hero for the month of June 2011.

He’s still in high school but 18-year-old Francis Mancho is already a hero in his community. Francis is in his fourth year of volunteering at Matheny Medical and Educational Center in Peapack, New Jersey, a hospital, school, and home to children and young adults with severe developmental disabilities. Francis requested $3,000 to purchase two touch screen computers to help him teach the youth entrepreneurial skills by selling organic produce to the staff from a community garden that he created last year.

"On May 31st 2010, I started a community garden on a 20 x 15 foot plot at the United Presbyterian Church in Flanders, New Jersey," he wrote in his application. "I asked our pastor and the Church Session for space to create my garden and they approved my project. My parents, sister and cousin helped to dig out the turf from the soccer field during Memorial Day weekend to get the garden started."

This year, Francis increased the size of the garden to 30 x 20 feet and has already planted tomatoes, green peppers, eggplant, squash (green and yellow), collard greens, pumpkin, turnip, cabbage, broccoli, parsley, lettuce, basil, thyme, beets, rosemary, cilantro, onions, garlic, carrots, and radishes. They will be sold at a Tea Time Café the students operate twice a week.

Up to 100 students will benefit from his gift. Francis starts college this fall at Lasalle University in Philadelphia. He has participated in various projects in his community...

This young man is "just too much" for lack of a better phrase! The smart, intelligent and self sacrificing athlete is a role model and leader in the making.......

DISCOVER CUMBRIA: EVENTS GALORE....

Presenting....Events Galore..In honour of my "One Year in the UK" anniversary.lol!

Adjusting to life in the small industrial town of Barrow in Furness. was not easy!!Life in the predominantly county, Cumbria has turned out to be not as bad...I am actually enjoying the peace and quiet!I believe that to truely enjoy a place you have to imerse yourself in the culture in one way or other!So far it has been - british pop music, doing lots of walks to enjoy the beautiful scenery and checking out the local events.

One of the things I love about living in a small town is that everything is a big deal....the town comes out with much enthusiasm for the public events! I have become an unofficial Ambassador of Cumbria..lol..It is beautiful county..If you love the outdoors you will definitely enjoy it! My stay has been filled with lots of what I call "culture moments" especially at work..The one thing I still do not get is British humour!!

There are have been a fair share of events in the past couple of weeks...Enjoy the picture story.

Keswick to Barrow 40 mile Walk - I am participated in the 45th K2B walk to raise money for local charities!"...The idea of walking from Keswick to Barrow originated in 1966 as a result of a statement made by the late US President, John F Kennedy to the effect that "every American should be capable of walking 50 miles a day". At this time the first Polaris Submarine - HMS Resolution was being built at the shipyard in Barrow and several American experts were resident in the area assisting with the project.." This was a big deal for me. I have not done anything like this in my life.I walked 18 miles from Keswick to Monk Coniston.

Cartmel Races (Cartmel) - Didn't bet on any horse...I am not a tierce fan...lol!It was fun to watch..

I could not try this..."Reverse Bunchee jumping" keh? A friend tried to convince me to go on this to no avail....lol!

It was a fun day of different games, jewelry, bags, art and craft!!

Holker Garden Festival (Cark) - Awesome floral and garden displays..."Made in Cumbria Marquee" featuring local foods, jewelry, arts and craft..and of course more shopping... I tell myself that I am giving back to the local economy....lol

Tesco Race for Life (Barrow in Furness) - OK, I have not seen this many people in pink!Lots of ambience as 800 women and by standers came out for 5 Km race for life...to raise money for Cancer Research UK! When I heard about this I didn't think twice about it because I have lost family to this disease, know a few survivors and a handful who continue to battle with the disease by the day.I believe that every little counts towards finding a cure!!

My 2011 GLIN (God-Love-Invest-Network) mantra has been great soo far and I thank God..Words can't describe it..So watch the video below..from my Afropop gospel collection..lol!!

Introducing "The Nambangi Brothers", a production company founded by three brothers. The film and multimedia company consists of graphic artists and multimedia experts and marketing consultants.

"Our objective is to go full time into film production, but we're professional marketers too so we do operate as marketing consultants for small businesses (concept, implementation, advertising and promo)"

Here is an interview with one of the brothers!!

Tell us about yourself.
My name is Cyril Ndoko Nambangi. I live in Dallas, TX and I'm a professional advertising copywriter and a filmmaker. My passion is filmmaking. I am currently CEO of THE NAMBANGI BROTHERS, a film production company based in Minnesota.

Who are the "Nambangi Brothers"?
The Nambangi Brothers are a filmmaking trio of siblings Cyril and Sidney Nambangi, and Eric Enongene. Each brother has a strong background in computers and multimedia. We are based in Texas, Minnesota and Sweden respectively, the brothers utilize multimedia to remotely collaborate on projects. Cyril provides the creative concept/idea, Sidney does the research, graphics and storyboards and Eric in charge of logistics and management. The task of project execution is entrusted in the hands of the principal filmmaker, Cyril Nambangi.

How did it all start?
We've always been film enthusiasts, growing up. And everyone also has a competitive and analytical mind. Many times after watching; or in our case "reviewing" other people's productions, we've always criticised and pondered how we could have done it better. That's just how we grew in confidence and fortified our determination to follow that path. Oh, plus we're very creative, so we know we can go head to head with the best and not even break into a sweat....hahaha

A brief about the "short" film Sicko.
The short film "Sicko" is just our way of introducing ourselves to the world. It tells our style -creative, edgy, witty, humurous, and even over-the-top, but at the same time you can tell it was not just for entertainment purposes. We used a unique style to ask a pertinent question that's been lingering on many people's minds.

What are the challenges you face in film production as a start up production company?
The main challenge is funding!We are focusing on short films now simply because they cost less to produce and are a great tool for advertising and showcasing our creative depth. Many people do not realize that it truly does take a lot to tell a compeling story in 5 minutes as opposed to telling one in 2 hours.

Our focus is short films while we raise funds for a feature film. We will collaborate with IR Media House (based in Minnesota) for future projects and possibly a feature.

We have a unique brand of storytelling that is itching to be unleashed.

Any other updates?
The Nambangi Brothers have just gotten into a partnership with Mr. Stephen Munabo, to launch "ViaLens Media" (a complete one-stop media production studio out in Dallas) where you can get all your multimedia needs met.. Event coverage (videography and photography), music videos, graphic design, film production, scriptwriting, website building, in-studio/on location photography and everything media.

Women In Energy Seminar..."Having It All"

I attended an amazing seminar last week organized by the SPE(Society of Petroleum Engineers)

Event: Women in Energy Seminar - "Having it All"
Venue: Imperial College School of Mines. London
Date: Thursday May 19th 2011

..Our industry is not the most "female friendly". I was very inspired and learnt a lot from the experiences of others and just had to share

Session One: "Wonder Woman: Fairy Tale or Urban Reality"?

There is no such thing as Wonder woman..It is a myth...

The first speaker has 18 yrs experience in Shell...has worked in different countries and one of the assignment that touched her life was China. She said her pearls of wisdom with a picture story..(she has a passion for photography)

The 5 pearls of Wisdom
1) Be Clear about what is important to you (Pictures: Of her Family). You will need to make choices and compromises. Unless you are passionate you will not be happy. She is now in the UK because of her old mother and has requested not to be given an assignment outside the UK. Her husband moved with her to China..tradeoff deal for him..because she made a previous trade off in her career because of his!!

2) Always be open to new experiences (Pictures of her stay in China). Take every opportunity to learn - personal or professional

3) Make sujre you have the right support - personnally and professionally. Mindset and attitude are Key!Your sucess is contigent on the teams you build.

4) Treat people how you want to be treated - give respect, gain respect!. Be clear about the person you want to be in difficult situations. Stay calm step outside the situations!

5) Dare To Win. Push yourself to the point where you can see yourself doing it. Look for new things and opportunities (Picture of her team in China and some words in Chinese..)

Also... do not channel your energy only within your company. Have activities outside work. This will help provide the balance that you need.

Conclusion: Be yourself, take risks, surround yourself with the right people!

I thought I was in awe by the first speaker.....The second speaker just wowed me..Over 20 years in the industry.Former Senior Executive of an Oil Major. The first lady to head a Shell business unit in Egypt. She worked offshore in the 80s which was unheard off for women.Mother of Five..I was like..mennn..How did she do it? Her words of wisdom

- There is no such thing as a "Wonder woman"..It is a myth

- Set Clear boundary conditions and Be direct. She gave an example about a boss who made it a point of duty to call her after working hours..One day she told him that she would appreciate if she doesn't call him between 6 and 8 pm because she spends the time with her kids. The reaction was not what she expected. She respected her time boundaries and the number of calls reduced.

- Focus on execution of priority all day.

- Reliability, Accountability and Credibility are Key. This will help create the working style that works for you. Get trust and deliver on your promisses and help to create the balance that you want to have.

- Strive to have a healthy balnce between Life and Work.

- Clarify your values. You have to make trade offs. Give yourself the permission to be perfect. She gave an example about how she went to a business trip leaving her whole family sick..She felt so guilty.She should have said NO to the trip and nothing will have happened but she chose to go because of how it will look to her bosses if she did not!!

- Ask for help. Find a mentor/coach (clearly define the expectations of mentoring). Build a network and support system. You need an amazing support system that will always be there as you through your career!Your Spouse, Family etc...

- Always have Plan B

Pitfalls: Always feeling you have to proof yourself. You are a woman so stop making excuses about it!

When asked how she knew it was time to move from one company to the next. Her response..You just have this feeling..where you don't have the drive and passion to go to work..You just know!!

Conclusion: Listen, Learn and Adapt!!

Honestly..I was very inspired by these women to say the least..

Another Highlight: Leveraging Social Media to Build Your career..

There was a lot of reaction from the audience about this..Which was very much expected..People are not comfortable sharing their lives on the internet

The message according to Thomas Power of http://www.ecademy.com/ : We need to go from "Institutional Thinking" which is very closed and selective to "Network Thinking" which is "Open, Accepting and Everything is Random".

Apparently this is the direction in which the world is moving to..People check your facebook page before an interview to know the kind of person you are. Your twitter and linked in pages are on a radar!!Lots of mumur after he said this...lol

How do you make Social Networking work for you?

- Understand what you stand for.. You will fall for everything if you don't stand for something. Q: Who follows You?

- Identify how you can serve others as in individual (Servant Leadership). Support, Help, Advice, Guidance?

- Why do people "Follow" You?

You need to answer these questions before you start to build your personal brand on the internet

- What is your social score? ie. How good you are online. Min score: 50. I no be know this one.I just shiddon tire.. Sites like Empire Avenue and Peer Index determine this based on the information you enter about yourself.

- Connect Your Platform. Connect all your profiles: google, linkedin,facebook, yahoomail, blogger..etc...and recheck your score...Honestly this is a bit scary..I thought to myself..I want to keep my profles "disconnected"..lol

- Learn by noticing and sharing. Learn by following the best people.

- Commit to habits..eg. blogging weekly, video monthly etc.

- Know what you want to share. Share the right things about you. You decide your "Social Identity"

Bottomline: Be in Control of your personal online brand!!

One message I got from a panel discussion about "Why Nice Girls" don't get the corner office": Women down play their skills and abilities. Most often than not when a woman is offered a position she asks "Do you think I am ready for this"?
So...Recognize your strengths, create depth in your skill and discipline. Do not underestimate yourself

Queens of SA House join Wax to celebrate Africa Day

Best known for delivering some of South Africa’s hottest house hits, the Queens of SA, Malehloka and Genevieve will join Cameroonian soul singer, Wax in a live concert at the Bassline in Newtown, Johannesburg for Africa Day 2011 on May 25th.

Wax is a powerful performer who has moved listeners across the world with his sensual guitar rhythms and deep lyrics, often laced with social activism. As a recording artist and producer, he is known for his versatility between genres, ranging from R&b to house. His live performances are deeply rooted in acoustic folk. African music expert, Richard Nwamba once compared him to the all-time Cameroonian greats, opining that the country had found a youngster capable of walking into the shoes of Richard Bona or Sally Nyolo.

“I grew up listening to the music of African greats such as Salif Keita and Manu Dibango. Developing a music career in South Africa has added a new cultural element - and this brings a fresh, exciting flavor to my shows.."says Wax.

The ‘Miss Real, Mr Regular’ singer will use this concert to kick off an African tour, before travelling to Cameroon and Nigeria.

Soulistic Music’s Malehloka Hlalele, simply known as Maleh will also serenade the crowd at the concert. She has within short time, made a name for herself as one of South Africa’s most powerful voices. With hits such as ‘Uzongilinda’ and ‘Falling’, Maleh has uncovered House music’s hottest property, but also remains jazz’s best kept secret.

Bernice Angoh Lakota and her daughter Nina Lakota did an amazing job representing Syl Anim at the show in Atlanta on April 30th 2011.

The BABA Collection
SYL ANIM unveiled her new collection recently at two events.
The 'Centres Des Createurs De Mode Du Cameroun's first anniversary' held in the Center at Mini Pris Bastos on April 30th 2011. The Centre for fashion is home to 5 designers and Syl Anim's first boutique!!
The second event,a Charity Gala organised by The Rotary Club Yaounde was held in Hilton Hotel on May 6th 2011. Its aim was to raise funds for the purchase of ambulances for Efoh hospital located on the Douala-Yaounde road. Syl Anim was the only designer at this event!!

" The name 'BABA' is coined from BA-menda and BA-mileke because of my choice of fabric for the collection. 'BABA' also means God in pidgin....He is and will always be my source of inspiration"

My company “Mindsping Partners Inc.” provides frontier markets intelligence reports, custom pre-feasibility analysis and strategic project management to companies looking to expand into the emerging markets of sub-Saharan Africa. I have and do work closely with several companies – many of them privately held, generally pursue targeted opportunities in growth sectors in Africa. So, I have to help them survey the business landscape, identify stakeholders (both positive and negative), conduct pre-feasibility analyses and develop models for the financial implications of these commitments.

What are challenges in today’s African Business world?,
The challenges of doing business in Africa today can best [and generally] be characterized as the “plague of flux” i.e. shifting atmospherics or enabling conditions which should bolster a company’s ability to make and implement its operation in a predictable environment.. Of course, trends over the last decade and a half has been that many African countries have emerged from the notorious trend which made them anathema for sustainable investment.

What are the growing sectors in Africa to target?
The forces behind growth in Africa today are its mineral resources, the coveted prize of the most powerful interests on our planet- and many of those interests are outside of the continent. For better or worse, opportunities will continue to open up in the allied industries of those sectors, but many of these opportunities are capital intensive.

For the SME entrepreneur, opportunities abound in consumer good and services. Value added opportunities in food, Fast-moving consumer goods(FMCG), customized communications services etc

What should an investor be looking for?
Depending on the sector, there are many indices to look for before developing a business case. Urbanization is one of them. Africa will be re-writing the script on development in the next 50 years. Unlike many other place in the world which have undergone the kinds of transformation we are witnessing, Africa does now have an over-arching philosophy around which African societies are organized and shaped – on the scale of most modern nation states….Indians are primary Hindu, the Japanese were principally Shinto/Buddhist, South and Central Americans are Catholic. Africa will be the first continent to be shaped and developed around exigencies of the free market!

In the end, the investor should look for people, and closely discern what their needs and wants are. In this respect, Africans are no different from people all over the world. They will demand and expect the same good and services “as seen on TV”! If the price point is right, the consumers will step up to the plate. Whether imported or manufactured locally, it is the entrepreneur’s challenge is to have the discerning wisdom to know the difference.

What challenges do Entrepreneurs and Investors face in Africa?
Entrepreneurs and investors still have to deal with the scourge of encumbering bureaucracies, enforcement of contracts, supply chain constraints etc. Every entrepreneur or investor has to deal with these realities, but I always insist that they make the investment up-front and become very aware of the environment they will be operating. Africa can be unkind to the “parachute” investor who comes in and proceed to undertake and investment without conducting the requisite “libations” – as we call it in my home country, Cameroon. Essentially, ensuring that stakeholders the local community understand and provide nominal sanction of an investment project. It goes a long way towards anchoring the investment in a community which will in turn go out of its way to make an investor/entrepreneur feel welcome and embraced. In Africa, such little gestures matter a lot.

About VC4Africa and your role in it

My association with VC4Africa.com goes back 3years. It was started by Ben White, whom I’ve collaborated with since, but whom, incidentally, I have never met. The forum has grown to over 4,200 investors and entrepreneurs from around the world who are focused on pursuing business and investment opportunities on the African continent. Group members have held about 20 meetings on three continents so far, and our growth rates suggest there is growing interest in Africa’s entrepreneurs and opportunities for venture capital on the continent. I have been a co-manager on the forum over the last two years and we just held two meet-ups in Cameroon (Buea and Douala) on May 4th and 6th.

We have a sister site VC4Africa.biz which invites entrepreneurs to post their projects and gain maximum visibility from investors and Venture capitalists. All indications are that Africa doesn’t have the dearth of entrepreneurs as many had concluded. It’s an exciting time indeed.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words...I love photography!!There is just something about capturing precious moments. It takes attention to detail, talent and creativity to do get the picture just right....Someone who does an amazing job at capturing these moments is Brinsly Ewang.

How I came to love photography....

My passion for photography was born from my desire to balance my profesional career with something that would let my mind escape into a "free fall state" once am not physically helping out the critical ill. As a multidisciplinary professional in the fields of Nuclear Medicine and Radiology, I enable the smooth hybridisation between two great invaluable technologies in the medical field - Nuclear science and Diagnostic Computed Tomography. My daily routine involves njecting the critically ill (cancer patients for the most part) with radioactive substance and acquiring high resolution cross-sectional radiographs; in this context photographs of the internal human anatomy and physiologic changes. The images I acquire each day eventually serve as a vital tool in finding answers or lead to a diagnosis for the many patients. It is the combination of my experience of caring for the critically ill coupled with the need to tune off my empathy for those I care which eventually led me to want to explore more of the brighter side of life - just people in a happier setting.

Finding that fine balance was tricky but critical in my quest as a whole person. Not realising that I already had a subtle obsession for photography. It took the intervention of my wife to realise that I had been our little boy's photographer soon as he arrived into our family in 2005. I bought a little point-and-shoot camera just before his birth with this wired but ambitious drive to capture every second from the moment he arrived.I am sure all new parents can relate to these exciting feelings.

As proof that I was actually on track to accomplished my mission, my wife drew my attention to the fact that I had infact filled the hard drive of our home PC with our son's first photos. Only then did I realise that photography was actually that balancing opportunity I have been looking for; the opportunity to connect with people in a whole different way - a way far from the pain felt by those I care for in my medical practice.

Presented with a brand new SLR camera as a birthday present, I have not been able to depart from my new found PASSION. To learn the tricks of the art, I aggressively began pursuing the science behind acquiring great photos. The quality of my work today has been the product of a robust photography training program at the Prince Georges Community College's School of Photography, the purchase of top of the line equipment and the drive to continue pushing my own boundaries. At PGCC, I was fortunate to have been trained by one of the finest;Mr. Robin Wright; a 35yrs veteran in the field and also Donald Trump’s official photographer of the Miss. USA Pageant for the East Coast.

Today, I see each assignment as a new opportunity to help someone express themselves in a way that not only tells a story but preserves their history. At every event, my approach is photojournalistic - unobstructively freezing each moment as it unfolds in high resolution photos. Acquiring the images is just the first phase. With an arsenal of photo editing softwares, every photo is perfected for those very rich and deep colors all presented in an artistic layout.

I see the camera now as an extension of my soul – it’s how I interpret the
beauty of the Human Race! Even more, it gives me that fine BALANCE between WORK
and LEISURE!

My services primarily involves people, from weddings to model portfolios, home portraiture and small intimate or corporate events.

So, let’s meet you

I am an everyday fun, passionate African woman! I like to think that I am a pragmatic entrepreneur with a creative head for business and a heart for social change. I am also a prolific (copy) Writer/Editor and one of the finalist of the hit show The Apprentice Africa which was shot in Lagos in 2008. I am a citizen of Cameroon named one of the country's top 50 Change-Agents of 2009. I am also a Egghead, who has helped pitch and win new businesses both in Africa and abroad, written industry articles and won awards. When I am not doing my "day job" (working as VP for Marketing & Sales at Virtual Terminal Network), I keep busy bringing to life ideas, start-up projects and various endeavours that will hopefully be the change I want to see in my community.

What inspired your idea, Residents Report?

Residents Report is going to be the web/mobile application that will revolutionarize the way we report and fix public services in Nigeria and perhaps in other parts of West Africa in the long term. The aim is to turn citizen complainers into neighborhood fixers; giving us all the tools we need to not only spot problems but get government to correct them in a prompt, cost-effective manner. You see, I got tired of being a complainer who will complain about a bad road for example, and then adopt the "sidon-look" attitude. I started asking myself ''What do I need to do to make this change? Who can I report this to? What platform can I use to aggregate such complains and then channel these to those responsible? How can I assist government while holding then accountable to the provision of these services?", - these questions led me to pro-actively thinking up and building the Residents Report idea. In the future, I see an innovative application that will help us organize ourselves. Our neighbourhoods/governments will become more cohesive, more proactive, more engaged, more social, more responsible, and in the end, so will our cities

Who were your other team members?

I built the prototype apps with a team of three great guys. Adebowale Owoseni who is an experienced Enterprise Software Application Developer, Ailende Truston, a very talented rising star in the Mobile Application Development arena and Abiodun Thorpe - one of the sharpest Web Application Developers I have met. The guys gave their all, and impressed me with what we delivered in the end.

How did you feel having to compete with male, in tech innovation since you were the ONLY female contestant?

The real challenge is this: coming up with a feasible project which is a solution in itself. Something that is a need and adds value and when implemented will bring about significant change really - not with the individuals I compete with. That has always been forefront in my mind when I am in a competitive environment. I generally feel the same: un-intimidated, revved-up to go, boiling with the adrenaline of professional passion, ready to give my everything to bring the idea to life.

Share your building experience i.e. working with strangers for 48hrs to make things happen....

It was fantastic. Such experiences are always unique to me as they continuously increase me professionally so this was a team not a group of strangers. We started by conceptualizing the idea, looking at the key players, the need, the value add etc......Then we looked at how to aggregate the platform, the complete process flow and how this will work out at the back end seamlessly. Finally, we answered some tough questions on stakeholder buy-in especially regarding the government, the residents and others. We also included a complete marketing and benefits strategy. With these laid out, we successfully came up with a working mobile and web prototype, all in 48hours. Even I was amazed!

As a Cameroonian, do you see the application being used in your country given the system of Government there?

Absolutely! This isn't about a system of government. Getting buy-in from the government especially is key and very possible. Agreed there are and will be other challenges in implementing the application on the ground real-time, however, what we are doing is building a platform that is relevant to our own environment taking into consideration these hurdles for example many African countries do not have a GPRS enabled mapping system for every street, address etc and that is a real challenge. This is why Residents Report is "crowd-sourcing" in genre. We are excited at the turn the application is now taking.

So, after winning what’s next?

The real work begins! We have developed a feasible implementation plan, phased it, scaled it and have started working on it. First step: a total working, productive web application. We are almost through with that. Watch this space. It is an exciting time for Nigeria, and for me.

Do you see yourself working on this fulltime?

I am already! I thrive on challenges. This is another bull I am taking by the horns. Literally!

Presenting our Designer Extraordinaire....I call her that because her work has no boundaries..I don't think we have seen everything yet..lol..I am sure the best is yet to come!

At SYL ANIM creativity and originality are priority. Most of the pieces are handmade and proudly African. Syl Anim's products include knitted clothes, necklaces, ‘Ankara’ T-shirts, Beads and latest addition are the Gladiator Sandals which are made from African fabric.

Sylvie lives in Lagos, Nigeria and has been in the industry for a couple of years. She has done shows like The Nigeria's Next Super Model 2009, Nigerian Television Fashion show 2009, Cameroon Top model 2010/, Bamenda Rocks 2009/10, Afric Collection 2010/11.

"My goal is to become a well known African designer and for the SYL ANIM brand to be recognized all over the world. I know that one day (soon and very soon!) celebrities will wear my designs"...says our designer extraordinaire..Sylvie Mbuta!

What is the SYL ANIM story?

"I started designing unofficially in 2008 and officially in 2009.Getting roles as an upcoming actress was difficult so I had to do something with my spare time. Designing came to mind. I have always had a flare for fashion.I wanted my designs to stand out so I chose the untreaded path - CROCHET.I made some pieces for my self and before i knew it I was getting orders from all over! When I put up my designs on Facebook, the orders tripled. People particularly love my designs because they are handmade."

Inspiration & Versatility....

" I get inspiration first and foremost from God.I know a lot of creative people say this but it is the truth.....For example I know that He gave me the idea of designing Gladiator sandals and how to execute it! It has been very successful. Believe it or not, I had a Revelation on Tuesday, March 22nd 2011 and the world will be amazed when I am done. I also get inspiration from things around me i.e. Television, Magazines,on the road etc.

I love to be versatile and I let my ideas just flow .I do not want to limit myself and that is why I knit, make beads, shoes, clothes etc..It will be unfair not to put my God-given talent to use.

I thank my clients for being very supportive and for those who haven't tried out a SYL ANIM DESIGN, don't be left out....."
